In today’s world, with such a focus on personal appearance, scars and blemishes can be considered something embarrassing. For tattoo enthusiasts and newcomers alike, one option has been to cover the scar with a tattoo- even Sylvester Stallone has been at it to cover burst veins obtained while filming Rocky.
There are mixed views on this practise- many tattooists will not want to touch a scar, and will tell you that tattooing over a scar can cause the ink to spread under the skin. It could also be said that covering a scar with a small tattoo will draw attention to the area and therefore heighten people’s awareness of the area you are trying to hide. If not placed sympathetically, you may be left with something even more visible than it was before.
However, once a scar has had at least two years to heal, and if done well, a tattoo can totally cover a scar and restore the wearer’s confidence. While browsing the web, I came across an image of a woman who had had a double mastectomy and decided to cover her whole chest with a ‘celtic bralet’ style tattoo. Whilst not an image I would personally have tattooed, I had to marvel at the significance of the tattoo to this woman, and the positive impact it would have had on her. Not a single scar can be seen beneath it. Although it is very eye catching, the intricacy and unusualness of the design is successful in detracting from the fact that she has had a double mastectomy.
